In Germany, New Year's Eve is called Silvester, after a pope who died on December 31 in the year 335. Germans toast midnight with sparkling wine, and millions of them watch the same short British comedy sketch, Dinner for One, every year.
Champagne became the New Year's drink in the 1800s. Champagne houses tied their wine to every kind of celebration they could think of, and sales grew from about 7 million bottles in 1850 to about 28 million by 1900.
Gary's earlier sparkling wines were mostly Riesling or Pinot Noir. The Brut is 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir. This time he wanted to show what Washington Chardonnay can do, and he made it with the holidays in mind.
What's pouring
Silvara Brut. Dry and lively, with fine bubbles that last. Good with salty snacks, spicy food and creamy desserts.
How it works
- A $5 pour of our Brut, one per person
- Take a bottle home and your $5 comes off the price
- Want more? The full tasting lineup is pouring all weekend
- Grab a seat by the fireplace inside or a fire pit outside
Something to tell your friends
A bottle of sparkling wine holds two to three times the pressure of a car tire. To open one, hold the cork still, turn the bottle slowly, and let it sigh.
