Prohibition ended on a Tuesday afternoon in 1933. We're toasting it Saturday.

On December 5, 1933, Utah became the 36th state to approve the 21st Amendment, and Prohibition was over. Washington had gone dry in 1916, four years before national Prohibition, so this state waited longer than most for that afternoon.

Gary's Dolcetto story starts in Piedmont, Italy. Near the town of Dogliani, an old man named Renato poured him a Dolcetto from a clay jug, watched him sniff it, and told him to quit sniffing and drink. Back home, Gary wanted a Washington Dolcetto that tasted like that glass. It took four years and 39 tries to find it.

What's pouring

2022 Silvara Dolcetto. Black cherry, wild plum and dried rose, with a little anise. Juicy and smooth, with soft tannins and a clean, dry finish. Open it while you cook. It's good with pizza, pasta and anything with tomato.

Something to tell your friends

Dolcetto means "little sweet one" in Italian, and the wine is dry. Renato's advice still stands: don't study it, drink it.
