The Quartet by the Fire

Gary mixed concert sound for twenty-some years. The Quartet is his four-piece band.

On November 14, 1936, France wrote down the rules for red wine from the Médoc. Six grapes made the list: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Carménère. Those six are still the grapes people mean when they say "Bordeaux blend." This Saturday, that list turns 90.

Gary will tell you a blend works like a good band. One part holds down the bottom, another carries the melody, and the rest fill in the parts you'd miss if they left.

Our 2020 Quartet is four of those six grapes, with Cabernet Sauvignon out front. The fruit comes from seven vineyards, and that's what gives it depth.

Something to tell your friends

In the US, a wine only needs 75% of one grape to put that grape's name on the label. Plenty of bottles labeled Cabernet are blends, too. They just don't say so.
