In Catholic parts of Germany and Austria, December 27 is the feast of St. John, and people bring wine to church to be blessed. They call it Johanniswein, St. John's wine. We'll leave the blessing to the church and stick to pouring.

White Stag is Riesling with bubbles. It's light and bright, and it's the glass Gary pours after a big dinner when somebody wants one more. In Germany, sparkling wine is called Sekt, and it's what people open at midnight on New Year's Eve.

Downtown is packed this week. Up on Stage Road, the fire's going and there's space to sit.

Silvara White Stag. Green apple and juicy pear on the nose, with a touch of honeysuckle. Sweet and crisp at once, with lively bubbles.

Something to tell your friends

Riesling has one of the oldest paper trails of any grape. On March 13, 1435, a German count's records listed a purchase of Riesling vines, and Germany's wine board now celebrates that date as Riesling's birthday.
