Winemaker's Notes: This one was supposed to go into a GSM. I bought six barrels of it for the blend, but I didn’t have a Syrah I liked enough, and the Grenache was drinking too good to risk. So I bottled the Grenache and the Mourvèdre each on their own. That Grenache went on to win double gold at the San Francisco Chronicle.
So here’s your chance to taste the grape that usually works in the back of a blend. You’ll get dark fruit and wild herbs up front. The tannins are fine-grained, so it’s smooth with just enough grip, and it finishes savory. Give it some time in the glass; it keeps opening up. Next time you have a GSM, see if you can pick it out.
