Mourvèdre Days

Almost nobody in Washington bottles Mourvèdre on its own. We did.

Mourvèdre usually stays in the background. In the south of France it goes into blends with Grenache and Syrah, where it adds grip and a dark, savory weight under the fruit. Its name almost never makes the front of the bottle.

Gary bought his six barrels for a blend like that. One taste on its own, and the blend never happened. He bottled the Mourvèdre by itself, and you've probably never tasted it that way.

Bandol became an official French wine region on November 11, 1941, and today a red wine from Bandol has to be at least half Mourvèdre. That's as close to a holiday as this grape gets, so we're giving it the weekend.

What's pouring

2022 Silvara Mourvèdre, from the Horse Heaven Hills. Dark fruit and wild herbs up front, fine tannins that keep it smooth with just enough grip, and a savory finish. Give it a few minutes in the glass. It keeps opening up.

Something to tell your friends

Mourvèdre goes by three names. Spain calls it Monastrell, and California called it Mataro for more than a hundred years. Growers in France say it likes its face in the sun and its feet in the water.
